Summary - Parenting in non-Western migrant families

A review and exploration

Original Title: Opvoeden in niet-westerse migrantengezinnen

This report describes the parenting of young children in families of non-Western origin. The focus is mainly on parents and children of Turkish, Moroccan, Surinamese and Antillean origin. Based on earlier qualitative research and existing quantitative data, the report paints a general picture of parenting in these families. To update and deepen the existing research data, focus groups were organised in 2015 with a number of migrant parents and with professionals working in the education or care sectors or at local authorities.
The report considers a number of themes: What do non-Western migrant parents consider important in bringing up their children? What parenting methods do they apply, according to their own reports and according to their children? What concerns do parents have and what support do they receive in bringing up their children from those around them? What is the position as regards the well-being of migrant children and what role can their upbringing play in this?

The editors, Freek Bucx and Simone de Roos, both work in the Care, Emancipation and Time Use research sector at SCP. Their research focuses on the care for and parenting of children and their psychosocial health.
