The number of workers on temporary employment contracts has risen sharply in the past 15 years. Various explanation have been proposed for this increase. This exploratory study addresses two of those explanations: the unfavourable economic circumstances of recent years, and employers’ increased liability for sick pay for those on long-term sick leave. To what extent is the experience of employers with these factors associated with the use of temporary employment contracts?
